Ekphrasis on Fresh
Today I attended a poetry workshop by Edward Vidaurre. The workshop was called "Ekphrasis on Fresh" and we wrote in response to paintings by a very cool artist named Gabriel Trevino which were on display at "Platform 204" -a gallery in Harlingen.
Here is my poem:
Every recipe is a balancing act,
water and flour, sugar and salt,
must be carefully portioned
to create something more than
just themselves. Something pliable,
something that becomes better held
\to the flame.
May your life be like a tortilla.
May it it wrap up goodness
and deliver it to you. May it taste as good
with carne guisada and it does with
cinnamon and sugar. May your life
be filled with pumpernickel and bagels,
with naan and rye, with pita and potato,
with communion wafers and blessings,
for all peoples know that bread is life,
and life is bread, and the greatest blessing
that can be bestowed is "more bread, more bread
and more life."
