Volver
I saw a pretty good movie tonight, Pedro Almodovar's Volver. It stars Penelope Cruz who was nominated for an Oscar for her performance. She's gorgeous in the movie, and gives a much better performance than she has in any of her American movies. She looks like a young Sophia Lauren. Carmen Maura plays a grandmother in the movie, and it took me awhile to recognize her. I remember her so vividly from Women on the Edge of a Nervous Breakdown that it took me awhile to realize that she has aged, as have I. The plot was the usual convoluted Almodovar scenario, but I think the plot was merely an excuse for Almodovar to create an ode to women. The movie is full of scenes of women caring for one another, protecting one another, kissing one another and doing whatever they have to do to survive. It's really worth seeing.
